I Me Mine

Tan Miaoqing

Hi, Moi, Ni Hao, the guy you are looking at is a Chinese male, officially named Tan Miaoqing, who is young, active, and open-minded. I am currently studying Computing Science in TKK, Finland. Besides programming, I am also interested in other attractive subjects, including literature, writing, Rock music, basketball, films, DV, photography, Internet, history, and culture.

As for my career, I would like to be a developer in the fields of wireless, mobile and Internet technologies. This summer I am working in TML as a summer trainee. My project is nomadic application that utilizes multimedia protocols such as SIP, RTP, and RTCP.

In the following, I will classify my life as multiple key words in order to display a silhouette of me.

Rabbit

Why I call myself as "Rabbit" or "Rabbit, run"? Several years ago, I watched the movie 8 mile, in which Eminem plays the lead role, whose nickname is "Rabbit". The movie is more or less the autobiography of Eminem, telling a story about a young Rap singer, who is struggling with his underground life and striving for a brighter future. I was deeply moved, and Eminem looked really cool, thus I chose "Rabbit" as my nickname.Later, I got to know an American novel named Rabbit, run written by John Updike. The novel depicts a 26-year-old former high school basketball player named "Rabbit" who attempts to escape the constraints of his life. It sounds extremely cool to a spiritual rebel like me. However, the funny thing is that a lot of Chinese only know my nickname "Rabbit" rather than my real name Tan Miaoqing, which is difficult even for a Chinese to memorize.

Strawberry Fields Forever

Why I name my homepage and blogs as "Strawberry Fields Forever"? Because of the famous song with the same name by the Beatles. Strawberry Fields is about a state of mind, as expressed by "nothing is real and nothing to get hung about". Furthermore, as "living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see" conveyed, the song can be interpreted as a escapist withdrawal from reality. True, life is always this hard, we often need a peaceful place to hide ourselves, wherever it is, or no matter it is real or virtual.

Teekkari

Teekkari is a Finnish word, meaning student of technology. Generally, I may be an alternative as a Teekkari. Before I became a true Teekkari at the age of 20, I was devoting myself to writing and playing DV, dreaming of being a writer or a television director, though my major is Software Engineering. Thereby, the first two years of my university life was painful, as I was struggling with my unrealistic ideal. I finally gave up in my Junior year, and began to study hard in order to be an IT professional in future.

Fortunately, I gradually captured the essence of programming in this year. Programming is similar to writing, as they are both a mechanism of presenting ideas. While the model of low level languages like C is machine-based, high level languages such as OO apply a model much closer to the thought of human beings.

In addition, as a traditional equation suggests, "programing = data structure + algorithm". Although I am poor at mathematic and algorithm, for my thought is much more sensitive than logistic, I am proficient in data structure, which is less logistic, and very analogous to architecture. For instance, the idea of design pattern originated as an architectural concept by Christopher Alexander. Moreover, as Rob Pike notes: "Data structures, not algorithms, are central to programming", I am finally capable of being a programmer.

Nerd

Basically, I am a partial nerd. The Merriam-Webster definition of nerd is an "unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person, especially one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits." I am accustomed to diving into computer science and broadening my interests, in addition, basketball further consumes some spare time, thus I seldom participate in social activities with other Chinese.

Another reason for me to escape parties is that, I am absolutely an idiot in terms of mainstream social activities favored by Chinese, for instance, playing cards, Mafia, Karaoke, gathering for dinner and talking about fashions. Neither do I know anything about Chinese popular culture like pop songs or TV dramas, thus I can hardly find a topic in Chinese social activities.

Instead, I have other thing to pursue: to be smart. Thus I want to write well, or to learn Chinese culture, or to recite ancient poems, or to shot great videos, or to understand how to program computers. All in all, to make great things that distinguish myself from others. In this sense, being nerd is sort of a social identity that I am chasing.

However, it does not mean that I do not communicate with people, by contrast, I communicate with others, especially with foreigners, very often. The situation is that, I love to make friends, but my discussion with them mostly concerns studying or seeking jobs. Nevertheless, I have already decided to improve my social skills, in order to explore more possibilities in my life.

Writing

Writing is my favorite hobby. To write well, especially to compose poetry, make you look cool. If you are interested, then look though my things, and figure me out. I strongly recommend the Pick Up of My Essays!

Additionally, as I stated above, programming is similar to writing, or, it is writing to computers. However, I less recommend my source code, for there is still a long way to go for my programming skill.
